History

ASP is a leading association of individuals from government, non-government agencies, and private sector with a common u unifying interest in preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS. The Society was established in 1996 by its Founding President, Dr. Ofelia T. Monzon who pioneered investigative studies on HIV/AIDS at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Alabang, Muntinlupa. It is affiliated to the AIDS Society of Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) and Philippine NGO Council on Population, Health and Welfare, Inc (PNGOC).

Since its inception on April 18, 1996, ASP has established a reputation for excellence in the quality of its activities, adhering to the founding Mission and Vision. With the critical observation that HIV/AIDS is a problem common to all people, ASP has shown sensitivity and responsiveness to HIV/AIDS issues of relevance to the community not only in this country but also in the Asia Pacific region. This is borne out by the activities it has pursued and continues to plan for.

An active member of the Philippine National AIDS Council, ASP has developed the "Ethical Guidelines in AIDS Investigations in the Philippines" which addresses the need to enhance prevention and control efforts while protecting the privacy, confidentiality and overall welfare of PWAs (persons with AIDS) involved in any form of research in the country. The Society initiated and organized the AIDS Media Awards to promote the development of tv and literature materials for children, adolescents and young adults as target consumers and readers. It also launched a series of story telling workshops for volunteers linking this medium with the prevention of HIV/AIDS among children. Children’s books on HIV/IADS were reprinted (an AIDS Media Awardees) and were used during storytelling caravan in various cities. A children’s book in Visayan dialect was also commissioned to a local author which was later used as an instrument in a scientific study funded by ASP to determine the effectiveness of three modes of educational delivery of AIDS facts to gradeschool boys and girls.

Linkages include 33 institutions/agencies based in Metro-Manila; 11 others in Luzon; 12 in the Visayas; and 20 in Mindanao.
