There is Hope for Children in Happy Stories
Using Storytelling among
children as an innovative strategy on education, advocacy and promotion of HIV/AIDS
prevention, care and support.
About the project
Globally, AIDS affects almost 14 million children. In the ASEAN region, it was estimated that
at the end of 1999, the cummulative number of children affected by AIDS both directly from an
infected parent and indirectly through loss of one or both parents was 138,780. AIDS is a
serious threat to our social and economic development by destroying and eroding our most
precious resources: our children. There is a need to pay more attention
on children today so as to face the challenges of tomorrow.
With the acknowledgement that storytelling is a form communication approach
that has proven successful in getting the attention of most children, The AIDS
Society of the Philippines, Inc. in partnership with Levi Strauss Philippines
conceptualized a project that will provide children with interesting, informative
and alternative information (information which children do not usually learn in
school) on the different issues on HIV/AIDS education, advocacy, prevention and care.
The project entitle "Sa Kuwentong Masaya, Bata'y May Pag-asa"uses storytelling
as an innovative communication approach to foster social change and responsibility among
children, specifically those 5-10 year old. These children are in a stage in their lives
where they are very curious and always searching for answers on things affecting them and
other children. The project was conceptualized primarily with the best interest of the
children in mind.
